Francois Millet & Fils, Les Rues, Pinot Noir, Chambolle-Musigny, Burgundy, 2019

François Millet is rightly famous in the Pinot Noir world. During his epic 35-year tenure at legendary Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, he put the historic producer back on Burgundy’s very top shelf where it belonged. So, it was huge news when he retired in June 2021 to focus solely on his own family project in Burgundy, and to continue his work with Prophet’s Rock in Central Otago. His family certainly aren’t lacking for talent either, his wife Michelle is from generations of Jura winemakers, and his two sons Julien and Adrien work in the industry as a winemaker and viticulturist respectively. At their home in Chambolle-Musigny they make tiny parcels of wine from across the region, in many cases just a single barrel.

At the bottom slope of Chambolle-Musigny but with the benefit of debris of the ice age ejection cone coming from the “combe”. The vineyard, planted early 70’s, sits on the other side of the highway from the village. Nice balance between spices, fruits and citrus, blood orange. A very serious ‘Bourgogne’ … Minimal extraction, only buckets overs, no plunging.
